Collecting Squished Pennies As We Travel

You Are Here:   Home > Squished Pennies

I know that I've been gone for a while -- my mother passed away on June 6th, and I've been absolutely overwhelmed dealing with everything. I'm just about ready to return to my normal life, and that means that my blogs will be returning too. I look forward to reconnecting with my site visitors -- keep an eye out for me in late September!

As a full-time RVer, I love to travel -- but I just don't have a lot of space for keepsakes. That's why elongated coins are the perfect souvenir -- inexpensive, highly portable, and found just about everywhere. I've pressed pennies in America, pesos in Mexico, pences in London, and slugs in Japan (a yen is too small to squish properly.) Elongated pennies aren't just for tacky tourist traps (although I must admit a weakness for those really bad "old school" attractions) -- I have pennies from art museums, libraries, churches, and a few of the 7 wonders of the world. There is even a coin press at Burning Man, for God's sake -- so the practice of destroying currency for recreational purposes has clearly passed into more "alternative" realms. I've also discovered that penny smushing crosses all ethnic and social lines. I've pressed pennies with bikers at the Sturgis Rally, with little kids at the zoo, and with Japanese tourists at Disney World. Foreigners are always stopping me as I turn the crank to ask what the heck I'm doing --it's the great international ice breaker!

I will confess to being a penny aficionado, but I'm not a freak about it. I'm not mortally wounded when forced to press a post-1982 penny (zinc core with a copper coating, rather than pure copper all the way through.) And I have no desire to collect EVERY penny from EVERY machine on the planet. I simply want coins from all of the places I've visited and events I've experienced in my life -- that's not asking too much, is it? I've got pictures of the elongates I've accumulated over the years -- as well as a list of pennies I'm missing (either because the machine was broken or had been removed when I visited.) Where applicable, I've included a link to either the PennyCollector, PressCoins, or ParkPennies website so you can see which one I'm referring to. If you have any of the pennies I need and would like to trade or sell them, just give me a shout!

Will do! We're visiting Tokyo this year (quite a few to collect there), but Singapore is definitely on the list somewhere down the road!

Our boys love collecting smashed pennies. (Actually they are less enamored with the collecting and more interested in the smashing). Me? I collect tea bag tags wherever I go. I love that you photographed your collection.
